Adirondack Chairs - A Feng Shui Garden Includes the Warmth of Wood
Spring is a time when people are thinking about how to re-decorate the patio, or backyard garden. What kinds of plants are new this year? Is it time for new garden furniture? What colors of annuals would energize or relax the garden? How is it possible to enjoy the garden more? If last year’s backyard efforts left you frustrated, think about creating a garden for relaxation and reflection. When I think of a garden, I think of meandering paths, quiet places to sit or meditate natural stone, the sound of a fountain and interesting ground cover with plants that appear to have naturally planted themselves. Planting vegetables is not enough when it comes to the perfect garden. I am more of a color and flower person and having the right ambiance and a setting to enjoy it is what gardening is all about. In Feng Shui, the garden should be a place that supports the home and homeowners. The principles of Feng Shui use movement of energy as the reason we feel good in spaces. Literally translated, Feng Shui means wind and water so movement is a big part of both of those things. The goal is balance and harmony in the garden. Feng Shui guidelines suggest curved and rounded lines instead of sharp angles and points. Many gardens feature unnatural somewhat artificial coloring or severe angles. These do not promote relaxation and they don’t “feel” good. Good Feng Shui gardens must have a place to sit and reflect on life. A garden should be a place to take a moment, smells the flowers, and appreciate the wonder of nature. Ideally, a Feng Shui garden would have benches and chairs of wood or stone instead of manmade aluminum or plastic. Somehow, plastic folding chairs just do not fit the natural picture. Beautifully crafted Adirondack Style chairs are ideal in most gardens and provide a special energy. Do not stop decorating with Feng Shui in your garden with just the chairs. The creatures of the garden want and need the best as well. Birdhouses are ideal to invite a loving energy and sound close to your setting. The best birdhouses are built with the birds in mind. Don’t get too carried away with the fancy purely decorative birdhouses that are of no use to the birds. Remember, a good Feng Shui garden enhances and supports nature, it does not create havoc with a bunch of “stuff” that is better off left at the store. Beverly
