The Adirondack Chair Washed Style And Other FinishesAdirondack chairs have been a well-loved choice of wood outdoor furniture for the better part of a century. Painted Adirondack chairs can be finished in several ways. Solid color, throughout the entire piece, is called the “pristine” finish. After the paint has been applied and dried, the chair’s edges and grain can be slightly sanded to give it an antique look: this is known as the “distressed” finish. The Adirondack chair “washed” finish is accomplished by sanding the entire chair to get a weathered and even more antique look. Wood is considered by many people to be the ideal building material for furniture, for both indoors and out. The varieties of wood are dizzying, but you can take comfort in the fact that all your wooden Adirondack chairs can be cleaned with warm water and mild detergent. The most common types of wood used for Adirondack furniture are: redwood, a durable hardwood grown on the west coast of North America, and cedar, a North American softwood, light in color and naturally splinter-free. Types Of Wood:§ Alder – a straight-grained and even-textured hardwood with no clear grain pattern. § Northern white cedar – softwood with an even grain and a fine even texture. § Mahogany – bug, mildew and rot resistant, this tropical hardwood is easily maintained. § Javanese teak – a close-grained hardwood with high natural oil and rubber content. § Western red cedar – a soft, sturdy wood recognized for its natural beauty and exceptional physical properties. § Southern yellow pine – softwood that is fairly heavy and hard. § Southern cypress – a versatile softwood ideal for outdoors.
